The grassy area along the flight line and taxiways was a great place to fly model airplanes, and on the weekends adults and kids came out to watch them fly--and crash.  The revetments in the distance were meant to suppress the noise of jet engines.  Although Landsberg had no jets originally, it eventually got French-built Fouga Magisters.
